A Place of Wild Adventures

Here at Prospect Park Zoo, a 30-acre expanse is home to about 1,000 animals. Located in Prospect Park, this zoo is home to around 180 different animal species, and with an average of 300,000 visitors a year, the park is also well-visited.

Among the zoos, the Prospect Park Zoo is one of the smaller ones, but the small and fine zoo is worth recommending, especially for children.

  • Red Pandas – These adorable and endangered mammals are native to the Himalayas and are known for their distinctive red fur and bushy tails.
  • Sea Lions – Prospect Park Zoo is home to California sea lions, known for their playful nature and impressive aquatic abilities.
  • Penguins – The zoo features a penguin exhibit where visitors can observe different species of penguins waddling, swimming, and diving in a specially designed habitat.
  • North American River Otters – These lively and charismatic mammals are well adapted for aquatic life and can be seen playing and swimming in their exhibit.
  • Hamadryas Baboons – Native to the Horn of Africa, these social primates can be observed in their spacious outdoor exhibit, showcasing their complex social behaviors.
  • Tamarins – The zoo is home to several species of tamarins, small South American monkeys known for their active nature and tufted ears.
  • A Variety of birds – Prospect Park Zoo houses a variety of bird species, including colorful parrots, macaws, and various types of waterfowl.
  • Reptiles and Amphibians – Visitors can encounter reptiles and amphibians such as snakes, turtles, frogs, and lizards, showcasing the diverse world of these fascinating creatures.

The Prospect Park Zoo opened in 1935 and was originally intended to make the borough of Brooklyn more attractive. The zoo has continued to grow over the years.

In 1988, the biggest change at Prospect Park Zoo took place with 37 million dollars and a subsequent 5-year renovation. The zoo is owned by the Wildlife Conservation Society, which is responsible for other zoos and aquariums in New York in addition to the Prospect Park Zoo.
