Welcome to America’s Backyard
The National Mall is a large park located in the heart of Washington, D.C., and is considered the “front yard” of the nation’s capital. It is a symbol of American democracy and history, and is home to many of the city’s most iconic landmarks and monuments.
History of the National Mall
The National Mall has a rich and storied history that spans over 200 years. It was originally planned as a grand public space in the nation’s capital and has since evolved into a symbol of American democracy and heritage.
In the late 1700s, Pierre L’Enfant was commissioned to design the city of Washington, D.C. He envisioned a grand public space, now known as the National Mall, that would serve as the “Grand Avenue” of the city. Over the next several decades, the mall was gradually developed, and several important landmarks were constructed, including the U.S. Capitol and the White House.
