The Museum
With 2 million visitors a year, New York’s Museum of Modern Art (or “MoMA” for short) is probably one of the most visited art museums in the world. For good reason, we think: Not only do you find fabulous exhibitions of modern art in the museum’s hallowed halls, but also a library that holds around 300,000 individual pieces. You could literally spend decades if you were trying to read them all.
But the museum also scores points across the board with the amazing diversity of its collections of modern and contemporary art: designs, drawings, paintings, sculptures, photographs, illustrations, films and more can be found in the various exhibitions.
History of MoMa
The fact that during the 1920s there weren’t any institutions for contemporary and modern art to be found anywhere in the United States played a major role in the founding of the Museum of Modern Art.
The museum eventually opened under the direction of Alfred Barr on November 7, 1929, and received immediate positive feedback. It continued to expand ever since and has had to change its location numerous times over the years, to ensure more space for its constantly growing collection.
