From Vandalism to Respected Artform
Miami’s Wynwood District has long been known for its colorful graffitis, yet no museum ever took great care of preserving the art form’s vibrant history. That was about to change when the Museum of Graffiti opened in 2020. Not only is it the first museum in the entire Art District that deal with the relatively new art form in an educational manner, it is so far also the only museum of its kind worldwide.
Located in the heart of the arty Wynwood district, one permanent and two temporary exhibitions present the history of the global graffiti art movement. These include various original works, as well as photos and videos. Some of the earliest works also date back all the way to the 1970s.
The 70s were the formative years of graffiti art, when children still spray-painted their names on walls. What may have started as a pastime and a little prank, developed over time into a respected art form – exactly this development can be experienced and understood in the Museum of Graffiti’s permanent as well as temporary exhibitions.
Before we forget: if you want to pick up a bottle yourself and start spraying murals, you are invited to take part in one of the museums’ weekly basic courses for graffiti beginners.
