The Harsh Beauty of the Ocean
An institution dedicated to the preservation of New England’s rich maritime history, the Mystic Seaport Museum in Mystic, Connecticut, is among the more unique experiences to be found on the New England coast.
More than 60 buildings make up the recreated 19th century coastal village that conserves and teaches all aspects of living with and from the ocean.
Make sure to visit the planetarium to learn more about the night sky and the history of maritime navigation. It’s a great way to broaden your horizon about the stars, planets and constellations that sailors have used for thousands of years to navigate the seas – prior to the invention of GPS.
You might also be interested in one of the several hands-on workshops offered by the museum. Why not learn how to tie knots, or build a boat? You never know when you might need it!
The museum is also home to a public research library and archives, containing over 2 million manuscripts, photographs, and artifacts related to maritime history.
